Safe Plastic Numbers

This article shows the points you should pay attention to when the use of plastic is inevitable. No plastic product is safe for food and beverage packaging (only very cheap).

Make sure to use glass whenever possible.

Plastic is not a substance found in nature, and most of the processing of crude oil in petroleum refineries is done from the remaining material (residue).

Technically, it is obtained by reacting carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen and other organic, inorganic materials under catalyzer under temperature and pressure.

Since the cost of production is very low, the usage area including food, beverage packaging all over the world is very widespread.

In particular, bottles of water and fizzy beverages, which have a direct impact on your health, must be protected very precisely after they are filled. Because of the inadequate storage conditions over time, or due to the dissolving effect of the acid, the bottles can dissolve and pass into the contents.

If we take a water bottle, for example; They are kept in storage before reaching the markets. In hot (summer) areas, when we think that the temperature reaches 30-50 degrees, it means that the storage of the beverages reaches 50-70 degrees.

At this temperature, it is inevitable that the harmful substances (BPA [1] and / or other harmful metals, dyestuffs ...) in the bottled water are dissolved and dissolved.

Plastic (even if it is heat resistant) is a heat-dissoluble material, do not heat the plastic, no matter how safe it is.

The right move is to avoid the plastic bottles and the plastics that are wrapped around the world if we stay away from the foods packed with plastic. We cannot escape from the use of plastics that have been spun around the whole world. But we have to take the necessary steps to reduce use and protect our health to a certain extent.

In case you cannot escape the most important action you need to do is to check the numbers on plastic bottles.

Attention: Most plastic products are washable in the dishwasher; microwaveable phrases only mean that the construction of the plastic material will not deteriorate. "It has no health meaning".

1. Polyethylene Terephthalate ( PET / PETE )

Pet is the material that gives the bottle its name.

Produced as "disposable", this material is BPA free, soft and colorless.

Repeated use, washing, heating is strongly discouraged. Antimony (toxic chemical) leaks are encountered when exposed to heat.

Recycling is possible.

2. High-Density Polyethylene ( HDPE )

It is a material that is considered safe for use in food. It does not contain BPA.

Recycling is possible.

3. Polyvinyl Chloride ( V or PVC )

It is a kind of plastic that should never be used with food and drinks. Leaks harmful (toxic) substances in its contents.

Recycling is difficult and limited.

4. Low-Density Polyethylene ( LDPE )

It is another material that is considered safe for use with food.

Recycling is possible.

5. PE Polyethylene ( PP or PE )

It is the safest type in plastic materials. HDPE and LDPE are the states of this material produced with high and low density. There are no harmful substances known to leak into food.

Recycling is possible.

6. Polystyrene ( PS )

This type of plastic, which can be in the form of foam [2], is the most dangerous plastic type that threatens human life.

We do not know that the foam-looking plate underneath your meat, chicken, meat, is actually carcinogenic plastic.

As foam packaging products in restaurants / kiosks, foam tea cups, coffee cups, plastic cutlery ...

According to the Science and Education Achievement Foundation;

Prolonged exposure to styrene in small quantities leads to neurotoxic (fatigue, nervousness, sleep deprivation), hematological (low platelet and hemoglobin values), cytogenetic (chromosomal and lymphatic abnormalities) and carcinogenic effects.

7. Other

Plastics with the number 7 do not belong to any species. All plastics that do not have the first 6 species content are given number 7.

When the content is controlled, PC (Polycarbonate) and BPA is included.

[1] Bisphenol A (also known as BPA) This substance is used to make polycarbonate very hard and bright like glass.

[2] The material is in Styrofoam appearance and generally used for packaging.
